Meet the Baker
Canela smells like home.
It’s the scent of arroz con leche - the dessert my mum used to make, and the first one I ever learned to cook.
I’m Silvia, born in Lima and now baking in Melbourne. I’ve lived in five different countries and spent years in corporate roles, but no matter where I was or what I did, I always found my way back to the kitchen. It’s where I feel most myself - calm, creative, and connected to my roots.
From my mum I learnt the hustle - she always pushed forward, starting small ventures to support the family. At one point she even sold alfajores. She taught me to be self-sufficient from early on.
From my dad I learnt focus and perseverance. He’s always been my go-to business advisor. He left the Navy career he loved so me and my siblings could study. His passion for sport shaped him - and in many ways, shaped me too: always aiming higher, never giving up.
Everything I bake carries a piece of both of them.
Canela was born from that mix of memories, flavours and moments that remind me of home.
My purpose is simple: to share Peruvian desserts with Melbourne. For Latinos, it’s the taste of home. For Aussies, it’s something new to discover - and I’m pretty sure they’ll love it.
